Audio distortion with DeckLink Studio

Terminology: The following technical note refers to a phone plug which is also known as a TRS connector. Plug refers to a male connector. Jack refers to a female connector and is also known as a socket.

Audio from DeckLink Studio will sound distorted if a mono plug is connected to a 1/4" phone audio jack when capturing analog audio input, or when monitoring analog or AES/EBU audio output.

When connecting audio cables to the 1/4" phone jacks on DeckLink Studio, it is essential to use cables which provide a 1/4" stereo phone plug. The other end of the cable might feature an XLR or RCA connector and will work fine so long as a 1/4" stereo phone plug is used at one end.

The following illustration shows a stereo, 1/4" stereo phone plug on the left and a mono version on the right. The stereo plug is required for compatibility with all 1/4" phone jacks on DeckLink Studio.
